Final Project!

Final Project.

ICT Project

This is slightly off topic but i had to include some of the bands that i have seen :) I love music and so I go to see my favourite bands quite often. When i go to concerts and gigs with my friends we have so much fun! So i have included this in my project as music is a huge part of my life.
So back to holidays...When i was growing up i watched a lot of cartoons, mostly Disney. I still watch them all the time now even though i am almost 20. Some people find it strange that most of my favourite films are cartoons and animation. The reason i like them so much is because i like the idea of them. I love that no matter what happens there is always a happy ending. I suppose in that sense it reminds me of what my Bampy said, that anything is possible. No matter what the characters are put through, something good always comes from it. I always like to think that life is actually like this. So when things in life are tough, if i keep going and keep trying, everything will be okay.

Alice in Wonderland is my favourite Disney film ever. I remember when i always used to watch it when i went to my Nanny and Bampy's house. The "grown ups" would sit in the kitchen talking and the kids would have to sit in the front room and watch films. There was a pile of Disney Videos next to the T.V and Alice in Wonderland was one of them. I always wanted to watch that but my cousins would always want to watch something else. We took it in turns to pick a video and i looked forward to my turn so much! I'm using this in my sense of place because i feel at home when im at my Nanny's house. There are so many things around her house that remind me of my childhood and visits to see them. For example, she had an amazing patchwork quilt that she kept on the back of one of the chairs in the front room which we all argued over becuase we all wanted to use it.  There was also a special spoon that we all wanted to use. Im not even sure why it was so special or why we all wanted to use it. My Nanny still has the blanket and when we go there now we still use the blanket! She also still has the spoon and at Easter she took it out and we all argued over who got to use it! My Nanny and Bampy are a huge part of my life and definetely make me feel at home. I think the reason i liked Alice in Wonderland is becuase I also love this story becuase Alice goes to this strange place, where everthing is completely different, and she gets involved. When i was a child this encouraged me to branch out and try new things, make new friends and not be afraid to do something new.

I love the old version of Alice in Wonderland (1951) which is the one i watched as a child, but the new (2010) film was still amazing. This film is about a girl who is pressured into getting married to someone even though she isn't ready for marriage. She runs away into the forest where she goes to Wonderland...where she meets new characters and interesting people. I love the idea of having somewhere to go when times get hard, somewhere away from the stresses of life.

ICT Project

The first page of my scrapbook is something i drew. I found a photo of one of the beaches i visited on holiday and drew it. I've stuck on some pictures of flags of some of the countries i have visited in the past years.

I was looking through my photos of past holidays with my family and i found one of a beach at sunset. It wasn't a very good photo, it was blurry, so i drew it instead. I cannot remember where the photo was taken or what holiday it was, but i can remember the night. It's a night that me and the rest of the family remember and talk about often. We were walking home one night along the beach and the sunset looked amazing. So even though we all had our own plans that night we all sat and watched the sunset. :D It was amazing.

I didn't want my assignment to only be on holidays, because i have been places with my families that i will always remember that were here in Britain. That is why i have included this drawing of a turtle. We went to Western Super Mare one year, and we went to "SeaQuarium". This was a brilliant trip becuase we got to see animals that would not usually be seen here in Britain. I loved watching the fish and other animals, but the Turtle was my favourite. They are so interesting! :)

Another day trip i remember is when my Bampy (Grandad) took me to a flower show in Bristol. He always loved Gardening, and so when he retired he spent a lot of time in his Garden with his plants. He took me to Bristol when i was 11 to see a flower show, i was not looking forward to it! I didn't want to go so i kept trying to think of an excuse to get out of it. When we got there i met a woman who had spent years and years trying to make her Sunflowers grow huge. She always grew the sunflowers and came to the competition but there was always someone with bigger, better flowers so she never won...but she never gave up! The year i went she won 1st prize! My Grandad went to the show every year, so he knew the woman. He was so happy for her. I remember he introduced me to her and said something like "This is why you should never give up, keep trying and you will succeed in everything you do" I have always remembered this, and now whenever i get stuck and am about to give up, i think of this day and it makes me feel better.

When i was 13 my Nan wanted to take me to watch Cinderella on Ice. It was almost Chrismas and she said that it was part of my present. I had always wanted to go so i was reallt excited! Watching the dancers move around so effortlessly was brilliant. The story was nothing like what i expected but i really enjoyed it anyway. It was brilliant, the way there was no speaking, just music and dance, yet we knew what they were feeling! I thought that was mind blowing. This was definetely one of my favourite memories with my Nanny.

This is slightly off topic but i had to include some of the bands that i have seen :) I love music and so I go to see my favourite bands quite often. When i go to concerts and gigs with my friends we have so much fun! So i have included this in my project as music is a huge part of my life.

I have had many ideas about what to do for this assignment. Originally i was going to do fashion, but then the brief was changed to sense of place so i thought it would be better to do a topic more related to myself. I decided to do Family and places i have been with my family. I chose this topic because i always remember trips with my family to be amazing. The best memories i have of my family are always of trips with my Dad, my Brother and Sister. Every now and again my Aunt and her family would join us and it was always brilliant! Family is a huge part of my life, and i would be lost without them. So, my assignment is going to be on Family, and places we've been together. I will look at past holidays and places we have been and pick out my favourites and put them together in my scrap book.

What is education? Guest speaker (Jane Davidson)

Jane Davidosn was the Minister for Education for 7 years. She talked to us about the changes in education over the years. She started ny saying that the National Curriculum was introduced in the 1980's. This meant that the teachers were no longer in charge of what was taught, as all teachers had to follow the same plan. Teachers at the time were not happy with this as it meant that their freedom and imagination was taken away from them. Margaret Thatcher said that she did not want teachers to have freedom and that all students should learn the same no matter where they were. She explained that when the children were 11 they were split into groups according to their ability. They were moving on to do either OCR's or GSE's. She explained that those who went on to do CSC's were unlikely to get into higher education.
The introduction to the National Curriculum also meant that the children were divided into streams that best suited their abilities. SAT's were introduced for 7 year olds in 1991, for 11 year olds in 1995 and 14 year olds in 1998. This meant that the education system was now structured so all children had a similar experience.

In 1997 there was a change of government to labour. Tony Blair said in his speech "Education, Education, Education" which is still very memorable today. He said that the National Curriculum was too restricted and needed to change. Jane Davidson told us that Education Policy was the same in Wales and England until the Assembly government was introduced.

Jane Davidson was elected Minister of Education in 2000. She introduced a new Foundation Phase for 3-7 year olds.

Highways of Access
More people from poor areas go to University or other higher education than would be expected -21%. This is because there is lots of help offered to make this possible.

Wales - Facts
Wales is more poor than the rest of the UK. On average Wales have lower earning than the rest of the UK, and more Welsh people have less or no qualifications.
Regional Pay - Pay and Wages are a lot less in the Wales than they are in the rest of the UK. Teachers in Wales earn on average 10% less than teachers in England.

Increase Standards of Higher Education
More investments
Foundation Phase for 3-7 year olds
New curriculum which allows teachers to be imaginative
Make class sizes smaller - students benefit because the teacher has more time to focus on each of them
Free breakfasts available to children. This is beneficial to the students who either can't afford to have breakfast in the mornings before school, or for those whose parents work early and have no time to make breakfast in the morning. Breakfast is important as it prepares children for the day ahead, giving them the energy they will be needing.

What is education? Guest speaker (Nick Bennett)

Nick Bennett is the principle of Gower College, Swansea. He gave us an overview of further education in Wales.
He bagan by talking about what Further education is for. He said that it:

Underpins social justice
  • Widening access (Get more skills and qualifications)
  • Second chance (Get qualifications later in life for those who failed at school)
  • Cultural awareness
  • Financial support
  • Community regeneration
  • Civic duty
Support for Economy
  • Employer engagement
  • Vocational qualifications
  • Workforce development (get skills to get a better job)
  • International partnership
  • Enterpreneurship
  • Knowledge exploition
  • Work based learning
  • Business generation
Teaching and learning opportunites
  • Innovation
  • Welsh medium
  • Progression
  • Flexible
  • Tailored
  • Local
Nick then went on to give some statistics about further education...
In 2009-10 there were 184,730 learners in further education - 95% of which were from wales.
In wales there are more than 5000 different courses available
16 -19 year olds are 2 times more likely to be in college than they are to be in schools with sixth form.

In 2011 there was a Welsh Government Programme set up to:
  • Improve further and higher education. It encouraged further mergeres of further education colleges where they provide increased learning opportunites and enable closer collaboration between further education and higher edcuation.  It is also improved because it maintains committment by providing financial support to students from low income households.
  • Improve skills for employment. They offer training for young people and apprentership opportunies.

What is education? Guest speaker (Mike Day)

Mike Day is a Cabinet Member and he talked to us about Education Policy. In this lecture we were given background information on what education is for and what education policy actually is. Education occurs in different instituions for different purposes. Therefore, education policy can directly affect the education of all children. Education policies are rules that that are used in schools to teach children effectively and properly. These rules state how childre learn and what they learn. The most important fact about Educational Policies is that they can in turn keep children in school and minimise truancy.
We then talked about who should run education policy.
Then we talked about where education policy is developed:
  • Welsh Government
  • Local Authority
  • School and Governing body level
Mike Day didn't get to finish his presentation because he ran out of time.

What is education? Guest Speaker (Olive Hopker)

Olive Hopker

Olive Hopker is Head of Planning and Development. She was talking to us about Collaboration VS Competition. At the beginning of the lecture she gave us a handout that we had to read to ourselves for a few minutes about examples of government statements. This handout had a few quotes on it by Leighton Andrews and the spokesman for Welsh Government in Wales. She told us that the Governent is promoting the benefits of collaboration in education covering higher education, local education authorities and 6th form schools. She then gave us some examples of collaboration and competition which are listed below.

Collaboration
  • External examiner
  • Research projects
  • Library access
  • ICT
  • Academic development
Competition
  • Student Recruitment
  • Leauge tables
  • Research funding
  • Staff recruitment
  • Development Funding
  • Student places
She then said that there are benefits for collaboration including:
  • shared expertise and knowledge
  • greater efficiency
  • cost saving
  • greater effectiveness
  • enhance reputation
  • value of external eye
An External eye is someone who looks at whats being done and suggests ways to make it better.

She then explained the benefits of competition:
  • Promotes efforts to do better
  • Provides choice of alternative products / services.
She then went on to talk about HEI (Higher Education Institutute) giving examples of benefits and limitations. She also talked about the Regional Dimension to the Planning and Delivery of Higher Education which is directed and controlled by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW). HEFCW is the body responsible for allovcation of public funding for HE across Wales.
HEFCW call for regional strategies with details of course rationalisation and bids for reward funding. She explained the definitions of the three regions:
  1. North - Bangor, Aberystwyth and Glyndwr
  2. South East - Cardiff, Glamorgan, Newport and UWIC
  3. South West - Swansea, Swansea Met and Trinity St David

What is education? Guest speaker (Steve Gulluck)

Steve Gulluck continued...

We then had a seminar with Steve where he discussed the role of governors further. He gave the class a task to do in groups. The task was discussing what we thought was important for health and safety when the teacher took children on a school trip outside of the school. We came up with a few ideas we thought were the most important including:
  • First aid kit
  • Registers
  • Medical details of the children going
  • Contact details of the children going
We then took it in turns to discuss this list with the rest of the class to see if the other groups agreed, or if they came up with more answers to add to the list. Then Steve explained to us why these items were all important. Having a first aid kit is very important because if there are any accidents the teacher needs to have the equipment to help them. Registers are important to make sure that no children get left behind. Medical details of the children are important because the teacher needs to know if the child has an allergy, or has diabetes just in case anything happens. He made it clear that having one number for each child was not enough just in case that phone was unavailable to contact in an emergency, therefore a reserve number would be needed.

I really enjoyed learning about Governers because i had no idea how much they actually did for the schools before. I also realised that when i am a teacher they will have a huge impact on a lot of the things i will be doing.

What is education? Guest speaker (Steve Gulluck)

Steve Gulluck
Steve Gulluck is the Director of the All Wales Centre for governer training and research. He talked to us about governors roles in schools. He explained to us what governors are and told us some information about them. He told us that there are roughly 23,000 governors and that they are not paid. He told us that they must meet at least 3 times a year.

He said there were 4 types of governing body. There is the abdicators, the adversaries, the supporters club, and the partners. I will give an overview of each.
The Abdicators - These governers do not have a lot of involvement in schools and leave all the decision making to the head or the "professionals"
The Adversaries - These governers have very high standards and keep a very close eye on the school and how it is run. They seek to make all the decisions about the running of the school.
The supporters club - These governers work together with the school to get things done. They offer support and advice and monitor the schools expeniture very closely.
The Partners - These are the best types of governers. They work in partnership with the head and staff. There is mutual trust and respect. Governers are equal partners in all the decision making.
He gave us an overview of the Roles of the Governing Body. For example:
  • Taking responsibility for the conduct of the school
  • Managing the schools budget
  • Governors have to be re-elected every 4 years
  • and more...
There are 6 types of governing body:
  1. Parent - Governors must have children at the school
  2. LEA - Picked by the council
  3. Teacher - Teachers of the schools
  4. Staff - People who work in the school but are not teachers, e.g. maintenance, secretary etc.
  5. Community - People who live in the area
  6. Head - The head teacher automatically becomes a governor but they do not have to accept it.
There is a huge shortage of community governors in many schools in areas of poverty and deprivation. Most governors are middle class. This is because governors are not paid and unemployed people would have to worry about things like money, time and transport. If they are not working and spending their time doing unpaid work, how are they going to cope? Middle class people however, can afford to spend some time doing unpaid work. However, not all schools are short of community workers, some have enough.

There are not many governors from ethnic minority backgrounds, so there is not a lot of governors representing them. Steve explained that this could be because they tend to work in news agents and restaurants and often work during the evening/nights which is when the meetings are held. He also said that it could be because of fear of racism and abuse making them uncomfortable and making  them lack confidence. Steve showed some of the brochures and posters that are used to advertise being a governor. He explained that he did not agree with the posters which were multilingual. He said that there is no translation provided during the meetings, so if someone who could not speak English saw the sign in another language they would be mislead into thinking that they could be a Governor and translations would be available to them.

There are also not a lot of governors under the age of 40. This could be because most people under the age of 40 would be tied down by other things like family and would not have a lot of time on their hands. Whereas people over 40 tend to have older children who can look after themselves or have moved out so they have more time on their hands.

There has been a lot of debate as to whether governors should be paid. So Steve Gulluck talked about why they should or shouldn't be paid. He said that if they were paid it would make the governors work harder, and more people would want to do it. However, if they were paid it would interest people purely because of the money and they would not have the children's best interests as heart. He also stresses that there is a problem with where the money would come from. There are already a lot of cuts being made in education, and having to pay the governors would mean there would be even less money to spend on education. The people who would lose out is teachers, because the money would be taken from their wages. The money would also come out of what is used to buy new equipment for the school, so the children would lose out there. He also said that "if it's not broke, don't fix it" meaning it is unpaid now, so why change it? Therefore he suggests that it would be best to be kept unpaid as changing it would cause more harm than good and I agree.

They also question who governors should be, should they be teachers, parents, strangers? Steve Gulluck told us that he thought it was very important to have parent governors because they have children in the school, so they really want the school to do well. Therefore they would work really hard to make sure that the school was being run properly.

Steve Gulluck explained to us that training to be a governor is free of charge and must be provided. However, in 2005, 14 out of 22 local authorities (more than half) did not get correct training. Some training sessions got cancelled due to the lack of interest. In some cases more than 20% of them failed to turn up.

What is Education? Guest speaker (Russell Grigg)

Dr Russell Grigg
Dr Russell Grigg is the head of the South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education. He came in to talk to us about Estyn. Estyn is the inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales. He went on to explain what it is that Estyn does and also his involvement within it. Estyn inspects quality and standards in education and training providers in Wales. Examples of some of the institutes Estyn is responsible for is
  • primary schools
  • secondary schools
  • special schools
  • local authority education services for children and young people
  • teacher education and training
  • work-based learning
  • and more...
They also provide advice to the Welsh Assembly Government on quality and standards in education and training in Wales and promote the spread of good practice in education and training.
He showed us a few examples of Inspections and reports. There were 2 different trypes. Annual and Thematic.
Thematic Reports - Each year, the Education Minister asks the Chief Inspector for advice on a range of themes in relation to education and training to help inform policy development and to monitor progress.
Annual Reports - Annual Reports provide an  overview of standards and performance of schools, and other education and training providers in Wales.

There are many things that need to be taken into account when it comes to making sure that schools are regularly inspected and that everything is how it should be. Regualar inspections in schools will ensure that children are being taught the right way, and will improve the way they learn making sure that all children are working to the best of their ability.

What is education - Guest speaker (Ken Jones)

Ken Jones

Ken Jones came in to talk about PISA (Programme for International Students), SEF (School Effectiveness Framework) and PLC (Professional Learning Communities).

  • PISA is an internationsl study which began on 2000. The aim of the PISA to test and evaluate the effectiveness of the eduaction systems in participating countries around the world. He talked about the scores from 2006 and 2010 and mentioned a few things that need to be improved on to make the education in UK better.
  • SEF are committed to providing a first class education system that enables children to reach their full potential.
  • PLC has the capacity to promote and sustain the learning of all professionals in the school community with the collective purpose of enhancing pupil learning. They work around different schools, finding ways to test their practice and together learn new and better approaches that will enhance all pupils’ learning.

Happy Photos :D

This week we were asked to pick an emotion and take some photos that represent that emotion. This week was a good week to do the emotions 'happy' becuase it has been really sunny and warm, so we went to the beach :) We were told to play around with different techniques to make the photos more interesting :) We then had to pick the best 6 to upload onto facebook.
The first picture is just of my name in the sand, something everyone does on the beach :)
The second drawing is of the view from the beach. I edited it on 'Picasa' to make it look more interesting :)
The third picture i chose is of my friends sun catcher :) I love this because it catches the sun and reflects it around the room making the whole place look warm and sunny :)
I took a picture of a bunch of flowers that were on my friends windowsill. They looked really pretty in the sunlight and made me happy.
These fingers represent me and my friend Hayley :) We are both always happy just like these smiling fingers :)
This is the beautiful view from my bedroom window which is making me happy :)

Visual Communication

This week we had our first two Visual Communication lessons with Suzie Pugh. In this lesson we had to sit in a circle and talk about whether or not we liked art or creativity. Then we looked at a couple of famous paintings and had to discuss what we thought about them and what we thought they meant. We looked at "The Scream" by Edvard Munch and some others. At the end of the lesson, Suzie gave us each a task to do over the reading week. We each had to
find 5 objects that were important to us. I decided to take i
• A photo of my cat, Otis (Who i love)
• A photo of me and my Uni friends who are amazing!
• An Oceana wristband (Because Oceana is my second home, and i spend a lot of time there :/)
• My favourite dvd (GARFIELD!!)
• A teddy of a purple monkey holding a baby monkey which my dad gave me a few years ago.

When we took the objects in to out second lesson, we were given double sided tape which he had to stick to the floor to make a grid of squares and put out objects in the squares. We had to go around in a circle and talk about our most important object and explain why you chose that to bring in.

I really enjoyed these Visual Communication lessons, Suzie is lovely and i like thinking about and talking about the paintings she shows us.

Reading Week

During reading week i attempted to do loads of work. I made a start on most of my assignments, particularly focusing on my Problem Solving assignment. I have started making my puppets and have also started the essay to go with it. I'm using my sewing machine for the first time in about a year so it is taking me a while to make the puppets. So far i have only made 4 puppets, but i would rather take a while to make them and have them looking good than have them looking rushed and really bad.

As well as doing my Problem Solving assignment i have also started doing my visual communications and ICT assignment. I have started making some designs for my dress to do as my final piece. I want to make an evening dress that is pretty and silky smooth.

Tagxedo

We went on the website http://www.tagxedo.com/ and had to make a picture made out of words that are most commonly used on my blog. This is what i made. The more often the word is used on the blog the bigger the word is. We could make it in different shapes, i chose a dove. :)

ICT Assignment

After thinking for ages for a topic to do for the ICT assignment i have decided that i will do it on Fashion. I chose this topic because i studied fashion at GCSE and therefore will have lots to write about. I also chose this becasue it is a topic that affects everyone everyday. Fashion is a way of expressing their opinions, and everyone prefers different things. Some people are dedicated to wearing what is the trend and will spend loads of money trying to get the latest trend. Others dont really care about it and will spend little money on whatever they can afford, not really caring at all.

For my final piece i will make a dress :D Using my super duper sewing machine!

Guest speaker 2 - Russell Grigg

Dr Russell Grigg, the Head of South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education was our guest speaker this week. He talked about Estyn - Estyn is the education and training inspectorate for Wales. He told what Estyn do, how he is involved with it, and he showed us examples of different reports and inspections. :)

Delicious

Mandy showed us a website where we can save web pages so we can find them wherever we go. From this we can also see what other people have saved on their user name. For example, if i type in http://delicious.com/peacehome i can see the websites that mandy has saved on hers. This is very handy as i can save websites on there from when im in lectures, and still can get the websites when im at home on my laptop.

:D
In today's ICT lesson we had to use different websites to create graffiti with a word of our choice. I used my name, Gabby. The website was called www.graffiticreator.net. We typed the word we wanted in the box and then experimented with different tools, changing the size, colour, position and pattern on the word. Then i saved the picture when i was happy with it to put on my blog :) This is it....

Then we used another website called text-image.com. On this website it asked to pick a photo and change it so the photo is made up of words and digits. You could change the colour of the words and the background to make it look different. This is it ....

Christmass!! :)

I went home for Christmas this week :)Yay! But when i was home i made sure i didn't waste my 3 weeks off! ;) I sorted out my folder and put everything in order!
I went to The Range and bought my materials that i needed for Caroline's assignment for my toy. I decided that i was going to make puppets. I bought some material, bobbly eyes, and other arty craft things to decorate them and make them look like the animals. I didnt have time over christmas to start making the toys so i bought my sewing machine back to uni with me so i can do it here.
I spent most of my chrsitmas with family, visiting everyone :) It was lo9vely to be home, but im glad to be back in swansea :D
