I was looking through my photos of past holidays with my family and i found one of a beach at sunset. It wasn't a very good photo, it was blurry, so i drew it instead. I cannot remember where the photo was taken or what holiday it was, but i can remember the night. It's a night that me and the rest of the family remember and talk about often. We were walking home one night along the beach and the sunset looked amazing. So even though we all had our own plans that night we all sat and watched the sunset. :D It was amazing.
I didn't want my assignment to only be on holidays, because i have been places with my families that i will always remember that were here in Britain. That is why i have included this drawing of a turtle. We went to Western Super Mare one year, and we went to "SeaQuarium". This was a brilliant trip becuase we got to see animals that would not usually be seen here in Britain. I loved watching the fish and other animals, but the Turtle was my favourite. They are so interesting! :)
Another day trip i remember is when my Bampy (Grandad) took me to a flower show in Bristol. He always loved Gardening, and so when he retired he spent a lot of time in his Garden with his plants. He took me to Bristol when i was 11 to see a flower show, i was not looking forward to it! I didn't want to go so i kept trying to think of an excuse to get out of it. When we got there i met a woman who had spent years and years trying to make her Sunflowers grow huge. She always grew the sunflowers and came to the competition but there was always someone with bigger, better flowers so she never won...but she never gave up! The year i went she won 1st prize! My Grandad went to the show every year, so he knew the woman. He was so happy for her. I remember he introduced me to her and said something like "This is why you should never give up, keep trying and you will succeed in everything you do" I have always remembered this, and now whenever i get stuck and am about to give up, i think of this day and it makes me feel better.
When i was 13 my Nan wanted to take me to watch Cinderella on Ice. It was almost Chrismas and she said that it was part of my present. I had always wanted to go so i was reallt excited! Watching the dancers move around so effortlessly was brilliant. The story was nothing like what i expected but i really enjoyed it anyway. It was brilliant, the way there was no speaking, just music and dance, yet we knew what they were feeling! I thought that was mind blowing. This was definetely one of my favourite memories with my Nanny.
This is slightly off topic but i had to include some of the bands that i have seen :) I love music and so I go to see my favourite bands quite often. When i go to concerts and gigs with my friends we have so much fun! So i have included this in my project as music is a huge part of my life.
So back to holidays...When i was growing up i watched a lot of cartoons, mostly Disney. I still watch them all the time now even though i am almost 20. Some people find it strange that most of my favourite films are cartoons and animation. The reason i like them so much is because i like the idea of them. I love that no matter what happens there is always a happy ending. I suppose in that sense it reminds me of what my Bampy said, that anything is possible. No matter what the characters are put through, something good always comes from it. I always like to think that life is actually like this. So when things in life are tough, if i keep going and keep trying, everything will be okay.
Alice in Wonderland is my favourite Disney film ever. I remember when i always used to watch it when i went to my Nanny and Bampy's house. The "grown ups" would sit in the kitchen talking and the kids would have to sit in the front room and watch films. There was a pile of Disney Videos next to the T.V and Alice in Wonderland was one of them. I always wanted to watch that but my cousins would always want to watch something else. We took it in turns to pick a video and i looked forward to my turn so much! I'm using this in my sense of place because i feel at home when im at my Nanny's house. There are so many things around her house that remind me of my childhood and visits to see them. For example, she had an amazing patchwork quilt that she kept on the back of one of the chairs in the front room which we all argued over becuase we all wanted to use it. There was also a special spoon that we all wanted to use. Im not even sure why it was so special or why we all wanted to use it. My Nanny still has the blanket and when we go there now we still use the blanket! She also still has the spoon and at Easter she took it out and we all argued over who got to use it! My Nanny and Bampy are a huge part of my life and definetely make me feel at home. I think the reason i liked Alice in Wonderland is becuase I also love this story becuase Alice goes to this strange place, where everthing is completely different, and she gets involved. When i was a child this encouraged me to branch out and try new things, make new friends and not be afraid to do something new.
I love the old version of Alice in Wonderland (1951) which is the one i watched as a child, but the new (2010) film was still amazing. This film is about a girl who is pressured into getting married to someone even though she isn't ready for marriage. She runs away into the forest where she goes to Wonderland...where she meets new characters and interesting people. I love the idea of having somewhere to go when times get hard, somewhere away from the stresses of life.
